22 May Baratti e Populonia
Baratti lies on the Tyrrhenian coast, on the slopes of Populonia, from which it is 1.5 km away, 12 km from Piombino, 15 from San Vincenzo, and about 80 from both Livorno (north) and Grosseto (south).
Gulf of Baratti
The small gulf consists of a basin straddling the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea north of the peninsula that makes up a large part of the municipality of Piombino. This basin lies between the promontory of Populonia and the vicinity of Torraccia, a hamlet of the municipality of San Vincenzo.
Populonia was an ancient Etruscan settlement, named Fufluna (from Fufluns, Etruscan god of wine and drunkenness) or Pupluna, the only Etruscan city that arose along the coast. It was one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan Dodecapolis, the main city-states that were part of Etruria, ruled by a lucumon. The acropolis of the historic city corresponds to today’s Poggio del Castello and Poggio del Telegrafo, located at the southwestern end of the Gulf of Baratti. As early as Archaic times, the settlement probably extended to the neighboring heights and the gulf area, where, in addition to the main necropolis of the city, the industrial district is also located. Together with Volterra it was one of the centers of major mining and metallurgical industry of the Etruscans.
