Suvereto

Suvereto

The town is one of the municipalities of the Val di Cornia, home to important wineries (the DOC Val di Cornia Suvereto is produced here) and is part of the Città del Vino association. The municipality was awarded the ‘Orange Flag’ by the Italian Touring Club and is part of the circuit of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Italy’. The municipality, part of the Val di Cornia district at the southern end of the province, is only a few minutes from the Tyrrhenian coast and is located in the heart of the Livorno Maremma.
It borders the province of Pisa to the east and the province of Grosseto to the south-east.

The hamlet of Prata is known for being the area of origin and production of the Lazzero di Prata, a prized type of olive that takes its name from the locality. The place name is first attested in 973 and derives from the Latin suber, ‘cork’, so Suvereto is the ‘cork forest’.

Parks
In the municipality of Suvereto, it is possible to visit the Montioni Interprovincial Park, part of the Val di Cornia Parks system. This park is characterised by a rich fauna, rare examples of typically Mediterranean flora and important monuments from the Napoleonic era that have recently been restored in the small hamlet of Montioni, such as the thermal baths, known as ‘della Baciocca’, and a commemorative obelisk dedicated to Elisa Bonaparte, Napoleon Bonaparte’s sister and princess of Lucca and Piombino.
